2 OF 8Do I need experience? Most ads ask for some. Shop and promoter jobs are the usual first step.Full answer ▾

The ads we read asked for two to four years, for example an in-store role in Abuja (OND and 2 years) and a Lagos field role (HND and 2–4 years). If you are new, search “sales attendant”, “shop assistant” or “promoter” as well: these are where many people start.

3 OF 8What qualification do I need?OND to HND in most ads; SSCE for many shop roles.Full answer ▾

Field and van sales roles commonly ask for HND or BSc, and van sales ads stress a “valid driver’s license (very important)”. Shop floor roles more often ask for SSCE.

Pay is only half the picture in sales. The next four answers cover commission, the daily work and where it leads.

Pay figures here come from real job ads on Nigerian job boards. Rules come from official sources, named under each answer.

5 OF 8How does commission work?A base salary plus a share of what you sell.Full answer ▾

Before you accept, ask for three things in writing: the base pay, the commission rate and the target. Several ads say “plus commission” or “performance bonuses”. Be careful with “commission only” roles, and never buy stock with your own money to start.

6 OF 8Is the work hard?It is target-driven, with lots of walking, standing or travel.Full answer ▾

You will talk to many customers a day and hear “no” often. People who enjoy talking, keep records and follow up do best. The upside is that good results show up in your pay.

7 OF 8Can I move up?Yes: sales supervisor roles list ₦150,000–₦250,000.Full answer ▾

Sales supervisor ads in Lagos and a territorial sales supervisor ad in Ibadan showed ₦150,000–₦250,000 a month on Jobberman.

8 OF 8How do I spot a fake sales job?You should never pay to start selling.Full answer ▾

Walk away if you are asked to pay for a form, training, a uniform, a test or a “starter kit”, promised high pay for little work, or asked for your BVN, bank PIN or OTP before you have even met the employer. Jobberman calls certification, background-check or set-up fees “a big red flag”. The EFCC has said it does not collect money from job seekers and asks people to report such requests at its nearest office or a police station.
